Anxiety disorders are a group of disorders that affect the general performance of an individual. Every disorder in the group has individual characteristics. Since they are varied, the six major types are – generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, obsessive a compulsive disorder, phobia, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The foremost member on the list is the generalized anxiety disorder. It is characterized by a subconscious worry and fear about a bad portent. This hinders productivity because such individual will be unable to complete the day’s tasks. Referred to as ‘worrywart’, the individual finds it difficult to communicate the worry to another person. Symptoms include fatigue, restlessness, insomnia, and unsettled tummy.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, known as OCD is caused by uncontrollable or unsurmountable behaviors and thoughts. A good example is when someone is constantly worried that they may hurt the next person accidentally. If you wash your hand severally without being satisfied with the cleanliness, you may have OCD.
For panic disorders, the individual has recurrent panic attacks out of the blues. This leads to the fear that this may occur in future again. Most panic disorder patients are often associated with agoraphobia, the fear of space where no help can be obtained. Such people avoid airports and shopping malls because of the large expanse of space.
Another type of anxiety disorder is called the phobia. This is often an exaggerated form of fear for someone or something that in reality, presents little or no threat at all. Examples are fear of spiders (arachnophobia), fear of height (claustrophobia), and so on. A severe phobia may be avoided but this only strengthens the phobia to consume you. The best method is a confrontation.
A common form of the disorder is post-traumatic stress disorder known as PTSD. This is an aftermath or result of a life-threatening or traumatizing event. The onset of PTSD involves flashbacks, hypervigilance, and nightmares. Recurrence of any of these events eventually leads to complete withdrawal from people or reminders of the event.
Social anxiety disorders are characterized by the fear of being perceived negatively or of humiliation. This social phobia had been described by some people as extreme shyness’. Such individuals avoid social events. The mild sufferers are often associate with ‘stage fright’ or ‘performance anxiety’.
The presence of adrenaline in the body signifies that anxiety is natural and realistic. However, it is normal to feel anxious when taking big leaps because the body naturally strives to stay alert and result focused. Many performers experience anxiety from time to time but the fear of failure or embarrassment pushes them to give a great delivery. Afterward, the muscles of the body relax and take the normal form.
The onset of anxiety disorders arises when the worry and stress are repeatedly taking over the individual’s life activities especially normal daily events. At this point, it is important to identify the triggers and evaluate the situation. This step will be a pathfinder of the possible solutions and treatments for the condition.
